The Dark Side of International Women's Day

Almost a thousand women a week are seeking help for domestic violence in the ACT.

Figures presented to the ACT Assembly as part of International Women's Day show a 23 per cent increase in demand for DV crisis services over the last 12 months, with around 51 thousand crisis intervention contacts recorded.

The figures also show calls to the Canberra Rape Crisis Service have increased by 156 per cent since 2010.

A parliamentary inquiry has heard Canberra's legal system is struggling to cope, wiith 600 women seeking advice on abusive partners in the past six months.
