93 percent of Canberra children lack water safety skills

Less than one in 10 Canberra children possess one of the most important skills, according to new figures.

According to Royal Life Saving ACT, the number of ACT children with water safety skills is dropping.

Just 7 percent of primary school students participating in swimming courses were able to meet the national standard, dropping from 15 percent last year.

The national benchmark requires children to swim 50 metres freestyle and backstroke, tread water in clothes and jump into deep water.

It comes as concerns arise about pool safety standards in the ACT.  Almost 1,000 ACT households have a backyard pool, with no central pool registry for the government to monitor.
