Canberra kids not reaching swim safety benchmark

Only 7 per cent of ACT primary school students reached the national standard in water safety skills this year.Concerns have arisen about pool safety standards in the ACT, with no central pool registry for the government to monitor.

Data from Royal Life Saving ACT shows only 7 percent of primary school students reached the national standards, including being able to swim 50 metres freestyle and backstroke and treading water fully clothed.

Royal Life Saving ACT CEO Cherry Bailey says the lack of government funding makes teaching swimming difficult.
