The ACT Government is concerned schools may have to be closed for a period of time to protect the health of children if bushfire smoke impacting the Territory doesn't clear.

Experts will be consulted with students set to return to classrooms by early February.

Professor in respiratory biology at the University of Technology, Brian Oliver said more research is needed to understand the effects of bushfire smoke, compared with toxic smoke from cars and cigarettes.
