2CA's first employee, George Barlin, passed away on the weekend, aged 100 years and 7 months. All of us at 2CA wish to express our condolences to George's family and thank him for his service to radio and television in the nation's capital.
George came to Canberra in 1932 and became the first employee of Canberra's first radio station, 2CA, operating from the back room of Jack Ryan's electrical shop in Kingston.
While employed as a broadcast cadet, George was soon running the station himself, with Jack enlisted and sent to war.
George went on to be instrumental in the establishment of television in Canberra in the late 50's and served on many company boards in the capital.
George's wife, Iris passed away earlier this year, also aged 100 years.
UPDATE: 2CA paid tribute yesterday to George with a special on air. You can listen to the audio below.
