Thousands of dollars in damages will be paid as part of a settlement in which the Emergency Services Agency has admitted breaking the law by denying leave to firefighters in the lead up to their retirements.
Back in May, The ACT government reached a settlement with the United Firefighters Union, bringing to an end legal action brought by the union on behalf of impacted firefighters.
The ACT government admitted to contravening the Fair Work Act – 20 times by refusing requests for transitional leave arrangements and refusing to consult on flexible work.
The Government’s paid 15-thousand dollars in damages to seven fire fighters – While one received 30-thousand.
It also agreed to pay 130-thousand dollars towards the union’s legal costs.
