ACT Policing asks motorist to watch out for motorcyclists

Following the deaths of two motorcyclists on the ACT’s roads in recent weeks, ACT Policing is asking road users to pay extra attention to motorcyclists this month.

The Road Safety Calendar now turning it’s focus to vulnerable road users.

This includes children, pedestrians and motorcyclists who do not have the same protection as a car in a collision.

ACT Policing Senior Constable Drew McKellar, a Road Policing motorcycle officer, says everyone who uses the roads needs to be aware of motorcycle safety.

“Since 2016, 40 people have lost their lives on the Territory’s roads, and nine of them, that’s more than 20 percent, have been motorcyclists,” Senior Constable McKellar said.

“As motorcyclists are only about 5 percent of registered vehicles, that’s a startling statistic.

“This month we’re asking all road users to be aware of motorcyclists, and for motorcyclists to remember how vulnerable they are”.
