ACT Policing would like to thank the community for their cooperation and understanding with the establishment of border check-points in line with the Public Health Direction.

For each site, Transport Canberra and City Services has authorised a Traffic Management Plan in consultation with ACT Policing, to ensure the safety of all road users and police officers during the operation. The plan identifies how to slow traffic down

At Pialligo Avenue, ACT Policing implemented a road closure with the exception of local traffic travelling north, to minimise the volume of traffic on Sutton Road heading towards ACT Policing’s compliance activities.

ACT Policing’s COVID-19 Taskforce Detective Superintendent Rohan Smith said all check-points established to support the Public Health Directions remain temporary as part of ACT Policing’s multi-pronged compliance approach.

“Earlier today we quickly rectified a miscommunication that prevented some people from passing through the road closure,” Detective Superintendent Smith said.

“Local traffic is allowed through, and that is defined as residents along Sutton Road and in Wamboin, or people who have business in that area.

“We acknowledge the messaging this morning may have been confusing; however, we have taken steps to ensure all staff are aware of the local area.

“People using Sutton Road to travel to the Federal Highway and other New South Wales towns have access to alternative routes, and as part of our mitigation strategy to reduce traffic volumes, they are not allowed through the road closure.

“We thank everyone for their patience as we do all that we can to keep our community safe.”

In the coming days, ACT Policing will also conduct compliance activities within the ACT.

“People will see random breath test style stations on roads across Canberra to ensure people are adhering to the Public Health Directions, particularly speaking with those that have interstate registered vehicles,” Detective Superintendent Smith said.
