The Australian Council on Smoking and Health (ACOSH) has released a National Illicit Tobacco Ladder ranking how governments across the country are performing when it comes to dealing with the banned products.

ACT sits at second last on the ladder, receiving a ranking of 26%. The Northern Territory came in last at 21%, while Queensland topped the ladder at 76%.

Laura Hunter, CEO of ACOSH, says the ACT Government isn’t doing nearly enough to fix the problem.

“The ACT needs stronger penalties, closure orders and landlord protections and penalties or they’ll remain stuck near the bottom,” Laura says.

Australia currently has around 40,000 stores selling tobacco, despite only around 10% of adults smoking.
