A 27-year-old Belconnen man has been charged with multiple driving and family violence offences after a high-speed pursuit through Canberra’s inner south overnight.

Police say the man allegedly assaulted his partner on Saturday before fleeing officers. An arrest warrant was issued earlier this week.

Around 1:30am Wednesday, police cordoned off a property in O’Malley where the man was believed to be hiding. He attempted to flee in a grey Volkswagen Jetta, but tyre deflation devices disabled the car. Despite driving on wheel rims and reaching speeds of up to 120 kilometres an hour, the pursuit continued through several suburbs, into Queanbeyan, and back into the ACT.

The chase ended on Uriarra Road in Beard when the man lost control and struck a signpost. He was arrested at the scene.

He is due to face the ACT Magistrates Court today on charges including reckless driving, failing to stop for police, and breaching good behaviour obligations. He also faces a range of family violence-related charges, including aggravated assault, forcible confinement, and escape from custody.
