The Canberra Greyhound Racing Club (CGRC) is currently fighting a move by the Greyhound Welfare Integrity Commission (GWIC) who are attempting to stop ACT owners and trainers from having any dogs in the ACT.

Greyhound racing has been banned in the ACT since 2018, with Canberra owners and trainers instead racing in NSW.

On May 13, the commission wrote to all ACT trainers and owners advising them that as of July 1, all their dogs had to be moved to NSW, otherwise they wouldn’t be allowed to race in the state. This move included retired greyhounds like pets.

CGRC Hon solicitor, and former ACT racing minster and Attorney General Bill Stefaniak says they want this process to stop.

“The CGRC calls on the NSW minister, as the minister responsible for GWIC to immediately direct GWIC to halt the process and in the first instance allow the deadline to be extended by one year to 1 July next year so the matter can be properly looked at and a solution (if any is needed) can be found.”
