A former Australian rifleman, who later become a Canberra based police officer,  is being posthumously awarded a Victoria Cross for his actions during the Vietnam War.

Private Richard Norden is being given Australia’s highest military honour, for bravery during the battle of Fire Support Base Coral.

During the fighting in 19-68, he ran into enemy fire to rescue a wounded commander.

After helping him to safety and being hurt in the process, Private Norden again put his life in danger retrieving the body of another soldier.

Governor-General Samantha Mostyn says his actions saved many lives:

Private Norden died in 19-72, in a motorbike accident while serving in the A-C-T police.

Parts of the veterans community have waged a years-long campaign for him to receive the Victoria Cross.]
