It’s one of the more iconic figures in the Parliamentary Triangle, but in April the Ben Chifley statue was damaged with his pipe snapped off, with just a small tip remaining.

The National Capital Authority has referred the matter to police who are investigating the incident, but it’s unlikely the culprit will be found.

It’s believed the vandal may have been anti-smoking, rather than against historical statues, the ACT Government has contacted artist Peter Corlett to see if a new pipe can be made to replace the old one.
