Today sees more than 300 cleaners at Canberra Hospital transferred to become ACT Government workers.

The United Workers Union says today marks the first day that cleaners in Canberra Hospital take their place alongside nurses, orderlies and other public sector hospital workers as ACT Government employees.

Erryn Cresshull, United Workers Union ACT Secretary, says workers had fought hard, lobbying the ACT Government to show them the respect their hard work and dedication deserves.

Ms Cresshull said direct employment with Canberra Health Services will offer cleaners secure jobs, with better pay and conditions and will provide cleaners access to training, career development and the opportunity to build a long-term career in the ACT Public Service.
