Deficit Concerns

The Opposition and Greens have slammed Labor, after it was revealed the ACT could be heading for its largest ever deficit.
The Liberals have accused government of deliberately misleading voters about the state of the territory’s finances, while the Greens say they would not support cuts to services to get the budget back in control.
Treasurer Chris Steel unveiled a mid-year budget update which showed a deficit of $971.7 million in 2024-25, mostly driven by increased funding for health services.
The pre-election budget update, forecast the deficit to reach $635.8 million in 2024-25, an increase of $11.7 million from the budget estimate last year.
Greens Leader Shane Rattenbury says Labor can’t punish lower income locals, just to balance the books, while Opposition Leader Leanne Castley says Canberrans deserve better.
