Government urged to do more to support Canberrans living in poverty

This week is Anti-Poverty week and the ACT Council of Social Service is calling on Governments to make changes to reduce poverty.

They want to see the rate of income support raised above the poverty line and more investment in social housing.

ACTCOSS CEO Dr Emma Campbell says these moves would mean more money goes back into the local economy.

“When they get additional money, people on low incomes don’t pay off mortgages or put it in their savings account,” said Dr Campbell.

“They spend it immediately on new clothes for the kids, getting their car fixed or some new whitegoods.”
