Concrete Bus Shelters, Urambi Village in Kambah, and Wybalena Grove in Cook have helped shape our city.

The ACT Heritage Council has provisionally registered each place on the ACT Heritage Register and is now seeking community feedback before making final registration decisions.

Council Chairperson Catherine Skippington said they highlight Canberra’s distinctive modernist designs.

“From bold bus shelter designs to community‑focused housing, these important 1970s innovations show Canberra has long take a creative and forward‑thinking approach,” Ms Skippington said.

Ms Skippington said the provisional registrations are in line with the Minister for Heritage’s recent Statement of Priorities – which identified protecting the city’s modernist heritage places.

“Recognising these unique designs and places are a celebration of what makes them so special. They each have strong frameworks already in place for their ongoing use and maintenance, and heritage listing doesn’t change that.

“We’re now encouraging everyone to tell us what these places mean to them and why they matter.”

Public comments are open from 8 April and close 5 May 2026.
