Increase in young Australians reaching crisis point before seeking support

Kids Helpline has warned that more young people across Australia are reaching crisis point before seeking support.

The data comes from the service’s 2025 Impact Report, with crisis interventions from Kids Helpline counsellors more than tripling across the past seven years.

In the ACT, counsellors responded to 2958 contacts last year, with suicide attempt being the top duty of care intervention, followed by child abuse and self-injury.

68% of contacts from the Australian Capital Territory required counselling, which is 5% higher
than nationally.

yourtown CEO Tracy Adams said the concerning increase in young people contacting Kids Helpline only after situations have escalated significantly illustrates the challenges Australian children are experiencing.

“We know at Kids Helpline that stigma remains one of the biggest barriers stopping young people from reaching out to the service. They worry about being judged, dismissed or becoming a burden if they speak up about what they’re feeling.”

“Our data shows that because of this stigma, young people are waiting until the breaking point to seek the help they need, and these numbers are growing.”

Kids Helpline is calling for increased funding and investment for early intervention tools to /support the growing numbers in crisis interventions
