Momentum Builds For Stage 2A Of Light Rail

The Federal government is supporting the next wire-free stage of light rail, as the ACT Government and its Federal colleagues have jointly announced a $181 million funding package.

“This contract is a critical milestone for the delivery of the Stage 2A extension of light rail to Commonwealth Park and supports future services to Woden,” Mr Steel said.

“We need to order new LRVs now, and upgrade our existing fleet and depot, to ensure we have enough vehicles manufactured, delivered, tested and ready to start services to Commonwealth Park when construction of the track is completed.”

Federal Transport Minister Catherine King who lived in Canberra for 6 years in her 30s, labelled the project as a game changer to get around the city.

“The Australian Government understands the importance of investing in reliable and efficient transport to help commuters and travellers navigate their home,” King said.

“This is another significant step in a project that will reduce congestion and improve travel times.”
