New Canberra Stadium Still Years Away

The local tourism industry believes Canberra will be left behind if planning doesn’t get underway for a new stadium and convention centre precinct.

The idea has been put on the back burner multiple times due to a lack of funding, 13 years after a new stadium was brought into the pipeline.

Canberra Region Tourism Leader’s Forum Chair David Marshall says he can’t understand why planning can’t start now.

“If a business case is going to take three years, why don’t we do the business case and the preparatory work and then push the button on it,” said Mr Marshall.

“Having to wait another six years at least, and then it is going to be probably another 10 years before we get a convention centre.

“We are in serious difficulty, in this city, of slipping way behind every other jurisdiction including the Northern Territory and Tasmania.”
