Opposition is growing in NSW against a move to decriminalise small amounts of illicit drugs in the ACT.
The private member’s bill would see offenders receive a fine instead of a potential two years jail time.
NSW Deputy Premier and member for Monaro John Barilaro has raised concern for the impact the bill would have on surrounding Canberra regions.
“Canberra’s always classified it’s self as the bush capital, surrounded by the region. The reality is and in the regions drugs are a real issue. An issue that tears families apart. If you’re going to go down the path of decriminalising, or what I call normalising drugs, you’re only asking for trouble.”
