Animal protection advocates are set to gather in the ACT Legislative Assembly on Wednesday as a petition opposing the killing of Bare Nosed wombats is formally tabled.

The ACT petition has attracted nearly 3000 signatures, which calls on the local Government to reject policies that could allow wombats to be shot by landholders and to rule out any move to declare wombats a Controlled Native Species.

Animal Liberation ACT claims it risks shifting the territory from protecting wombats as a native wildlife to one of routine killing under the guise of management.

Carolyn Drew from Animal Liberation ACT says the petition is about drawing a line.

“The ACT cannot claim to recognise animal sentience while simultaneously creating pathways that would permit wombats to be killed with little to no transparency or oversight.”
