The AFP Association is urging the ACT government to address staff shortages in the Territory’s police force.
The calls follow a horror crash by the Monaro Highway which killed two teenaged girls on Sunday morning
The association’s president Alex Caruana says officers had to be taken off regular community policing duties to assist with investigating the incident.
He says it’s putting public safety at risk.
“When you’ve got a fully staffed police force that’s okay,” Mr Caruana said.
“But, when you’re understaffed like we are you’re putting pressure on over time, you’re putting pressure on the families of officers.
“And officers are thinking to themselves another incident that could’ve been avoided.”
