Portable bond scheme to be debated in the ACT Legislative Assembly

The ACT Greens are bringing the proposal to the legislative assembly after widespread public support and endorsement from everyday renters.

A report from housing advocacy body Everybody’s Home found Canberrans on an annual income of $70,000 needed to devote 55 per cent of their earnings to securing a rental.

Already adopted in Victoria and parts of NSW, the scheme allows renters to transfer their existing bond to a new rental property, stopping renters from having to pay thousands for another bond before their old one is returned.

Greens Spokesperson for Housing, Rebecca Vassarotti said Canberrans are getting trapped in unaffordable rentals because the upfront cost of moving house is just too prohibitive.

“As inflation and global economic uncertainty surges, Canberrans are being forced to absorb the cost. And the people bearing the brunt of this cost-of-living crisis are everyday renters, sitting at the very bottom of a vicious housing food-chain” Ms Vassarotti said.

“It is a simple, common-sense solution that is already being implemented in other states and territories and it is time for the ACT Government to stop hiding behind its own bureaucratic malaise and fix this system for good.”

The motion will be debated in the assembly today.
