Next time you fly out of Canberra on Qantas, you may notice a subtle change to the airline’s “Welcome To Country” announcement.

The carrier has quietly deleted a small phrase from its in-flight acknowledgement.

For years, Qantas has paid respects to Indigenous Elders “Past, Present and Emerging”.

However, after consulting indigenous staff and leaders, the airline has removed the word “Emerging” as it was contested to undermine the importance of Eldership among cultures and was considered presumptuous.

The change came into effect quietly last year but it wasn’t noticed until recently and has reportedly been well received within First Nations groups
