Today marks the official start of storm season in the ACT, with residents being reminded that storms can strike with little warning and bring torrential rain, damaging winds, large hailstones and lightning.

The ACT SES is urging the community to take steps now and prepare.

The includes clearing gutters, trimming trees, removing and securing loose items around the house, obtaining home and contents insurance and repairing any existing damage.
