Telescope Turns 50

Share:

A Milestone today for the Anglo-Australian Telescope.

It’s the largest telescope in the Southern Hemisphere.

Opened in 1974 by King Charles.. who, back then was the Prince of Wales, it was one of the more sophisticated facilities of its time – boasting excellent optics, mechanical stability and precision computer control.

Until then, such telescopes were built in the northern hemisphere.

The facility at Coonabarabran today turns 50… and remains operational
