Nearly a dozen disadvantaged youth have lost their jobs after a popular cafe owned by Canberra Police Community Youth Club closed down at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park.
The Fairbairn-based not-for-profit ran the café since late 2021, employing 11 young people experiencing hardship.
It quickly became a crowd favorite among track-goers, and was on track to turning over $650,000 in its first year.
However, a New South Wales Land and Environment court ruling saw Wakefield Park’s owners shut down the raceway in September, stifling the business.
Canberra PCYC boss Cheryl O’Donnell says closing the cafe was a difficult decision for all involved.
