Wild weather expected to hit Canberra leading into weekend

A low pressure system could bring severe Thunderstorms for the ACT today.

Locals are being encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and be prepared for the possibility of heavy rain, hail and strong winds.

According to Bureau of Metrology weather forecaster David Wilke, a cold front moving across New South Wales is causing the wet weather.

“The area for severe thunderstorms on Thursday is very broad and really encompasses the east of the state” said Mr Wilke.

“That includes areas extending from Canberra through to Sydney and up through the Great Dividing Range.

“It’s a really broad area where we have the risk of thunderstorms becoming severe.”
