A Canberra man’s taken honours – picking up one of this year’s major Australian of the year awards.

A.C.T. based Professor Tom Calma is one of the country’s most respected human rights and social justice advocate.

He’s been named Senior Australian of the year.

The 69 year old is currently the chancellor of the University of Canberra.

Tennis star Dylan Allcott has handed over the mantle of Australian of the Year to documentary maker and body positivity campaigner Taryn Brumfitt.

Her work centres around helping people feel comfortable in their own skin.
