A Hero’s Ultramarathon: Firefighter’s Record-Breaking Attempt for Kids in Burns Unit at Westmead Hospital

An ultra running firefighter from Kiama will aim to run from the bottom of the ACT to the top tomorrow, raising awareness and money for the kids in the Burns Unit at Westmead Hospital.

Rob Mason will set a new record for others to chase, and is using tomorrow as a lead in to his run across New South Wales later this year, where he is hoping to raise $120,000 for the kids.

As a firefighter Rob says the cause is close to his heart.

“I’ve pretty much run all the races in Australia that I’ve wanted to run, and won all the races that I’ve wanted to,” he said.

“I’ve always been involved in the Burns Unit which supports the kids at Westmead Children’s Hospital from a charity perspective, so I wanted to take my running to another level and actually do something to raise awareness and a bucket load of money for those kids.”

Rob is no stranger to long distance running, winning last year’s Coast to Kosci a 240-kilometre race that takes you from a beach in Eden to the top of Australia at Mount Kosciuszko, before finishing at Charlotte Pass.

After seeing tomorrow’s forecast Rob still isn’t deterred by the goal he’s set.

“Thanks to Canberra for turning on the minus five in the morning, because it’s going to mean a lot of me getting out of my comfort zone as I get ready for my other run later in the year.”

Rob is hoping to finish the incredible 102-kilometre journey in just over 11 hours, which will see him run from Boboyan Road all the way to Bonner, through the heart of the Territory.

He’s still looking for sponsors that can help him reach his $120,000 target for his run across New South Wales later in the year, which he hopes will only take him an incredible 12-days to complete, running more than 100 kilometres a day.
