The Canberra Liberals have called on the government to freeze construction changes that could cost home builders.

The ACT Government announced it was adopting the National Construction Code 2025 in April, which sets the minimum requirements for safety, accessibility and sustainability in new buildings across Australia.

However, the Liberals have called for any changes that would increase the cost or complexity of building new homes to be frozen over fears of higher costs.

Shadow Minister for Home Ownership and Housing Affordability Deborah Morris MLA said Canberra’s housing crisis should be front of mind before any new regulatory burden is imposed on builders and home buyers.

“The building industry has warned that, if adopted, the NCC 2025 changes could add between $14,000 and $55,000 to the cost of a new home,” Ms Morris said.

“At a time when young Canberrans are struggling to get into the housing market, the Government should not be adding further costs without a clear and public assessment of the impact.”
