Backbenchers Lead Territory Rights Agenda

Two Labor backbenchers appear likely to lead the charge in changing Territory Rights Legislation.

Member for Canberra Alicia Payne and Darwin-based Luke Gosling will co-sponsor private members legislation to repeal the Andrews Bill.

Ms Payne says it’s simply about those living in Territories having the same rights as those in States

“It’s a debate that has a lot of strong views on either side, and deserves to be done in depth and respectfully,” she said.

“But right now we don’t have that right, where people over the border in Queanbeyan can.”

If introduced it could see a rare conscience vote in Parliament, similar to the Marriage Equality legislation.
