New safety measures have been put in place at the Canberra Hospital, following an incident last month where a man threatened staff with a knife.

Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith told the Legislative Assembly yesterday that all patients entering the Behavioural Assessment Unit will be screened with metal detection wands.

The action plan also requires police to call the hospital and notify staff in advance before they bring a complex patient in for treatment.

Ms Stephen-Smith says building work would also be done to address the lack of a rear exit from the staff station out of the Behavioural Assessment Unit.
