Legislation blocking a new Russian embassy in Canberra has quickly passed through both houses of Federal Parliament.
The diplomatic mission had been slated for construction in Yarralumla
Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil says Australia will maintain relations with Moscow, but the second embassy raises many concerns.
“The government has received clear national security advice that this would be a threat to our national security,” she said.
“That is why the government is acting decisively today to bring this long-standing matter to a close.”
Russia will be able to keep its existing diplomatic mission in the Canberra suburb of Griffith.
