Canberrans are being urged to contact the Tax Office over any questions regarding debts.

The recommendation follows letter campaign, mailed out by the Tax Office – explaining that some tax payers had historical debts.. – and the money will be taken from future tax refunds…

In some cases, the debts were decades old.

The ATO says the letters were to ensure people had full visibility of existing debts.. and they’d previously been informed about what was owing.

The move’s being described as “Eerily similar to the “Robo-debt” approach – and there’s no evidence to explain the debt.

Anyone with questions should contact the Tax Office directly.
