The Coles Supermarket in Amaroo is introducing new smart-gate technology as part of theft prevention.

Coles believes its Amaroo location is at “high risk”

so, when shoppers use the self checkout, they’re now facing a smart gate, which won’t open, if it detects a failure to scan payment for merchandise.

COLES has introduced the new technology to about a third of their stores….

The company says it’s experienced a 20 percent increase in stock loss in the year to June….

Supermarkets admit self-checkouts lower their labour costs but they’ve also made it easier to steal.
