The Environmental Department has defended the Kangaroo Management Program, which it says is critical to protecting our natural grassy woodlands from overgrazing.

Just over a thousand kangaroos will be removed during the program.

The reserves that will be affected include Mt Ainslie, Mt Majura, Mulanggari, Red Hill, Pinnacle and Molonglo River Reserve in the Kama section.

It will see the reserves closed Monday to Friday from 6pm until 6am for a six week period.
