ACT Police are after witnesses to an alleged assault committed against a police officer in Braddon yesterday afternoon.

At 3.30pm, police were patrolling on Lonsdale Street when a member of the public told them about a man running into traffic on Cooyong Street.

Police tried to stop the man but he ran away, eventually being caught after allegedly punching an officer in the head.

The 31-year old Gungahlin man has been charged, but police are appealing for witnesses or footage of the scene.
